After two months of delay, the OpenSuse project has released version 10.1 of Suse Linux. The reason for the delay is new software management, which integrates the suite management in the classic Yast2 Suse administration tool and Zenworks Linux Management (ZLM) for the distribution of software. The new system integrates the management of programs suites, updates, and patches, which used to be handled by separate tools in earlier versions of Suse Linux. The software has been updated as usual: Kernel 2.6.16, glibc-2.4, gcc 4.1.0, KDE 3.5.1, Firefox 1.5, and OpenOffice 2.0.2. However, the current release only contains the somewhat outdated Gnome 2.12 and Xorg 6.9. Xgl provides 3D effects on the desktop, though they are not enabled in the standard configuration. Some improvements have also been made in the integration of the Xen virtualization solution and the AppArmor security extension. The Gnome desktop has also been better integrated; in November, Novell was still thinking of using Gnome as its standard desktop.
